Low Pressure Passes Southeast of the Cape Wednesday
Rain will develop shortly after daybreak and quickly become steady over the morning hours. Rain, perhaps mixed with some sleet at times early on, will continue into the afternoon hours – when it will be locally heavy and potentially lead to some pockets of street flooding thanks to numerous downpours that are likely to shift through the area during the second half of the day.
Rain will taper down in the evening hours as the storm system lifts rapidly northward and past the region. The storm should deposit another 1 to 2″ of rainfall on the Cape and Islands.
In addition to the heavy rain, we can expect strong north and northeast winds of 25 to 40 mph with higher gusts. In fact, as we move into Wednesday afternoon, a few isolated gusts of 50 to 55 mph are likely – which could lead to some power outages here and there.
Rain and drizzle could transition to a few flurries and snow showers late Wednesday night as cold air works south and eastward toward the coast, but no travel-related issues are anticipated locally.
That said, if you have travel plans on the Cape tomorrow – just plan for a very windy and very wet day…and pack the umbrella.
However, if you are headed off-Cape – and traveling to a location north and west of I-95 in Southern New England – anticipate additional headaches as snow and sleet is likely as the day progresses. The deeper on gets into Southern New England (or if one is headed northward to VT, NH, ME) the worse the road conditions will be as snow will fall heavily at times. The going snowfall forecast map issued yesterday remains in place.
